Music man volunteers space to help city scene

24 Hours Calgary
25 Nov 2009

JENNA MCMURRAY, 24 HOURS — Hoping to bolster what can be a difficult music scene to get noticed in, the owner of a Calgary sound production and rehearsal studio is reaching out to new musicians without a space to call their own.

Though many businesses are feeling the effects of the economic downturn, Manny Severo, owner of Sound Loft, says a recession doesn’t change the fact Calgary musicians need studio space and equipment.

Though Severo was laid off from his day job as an industrial piping designer earlier this year, he says he’s more concerned with helping new artists than he is with turning a profit and will donate free time in his four studios once a month.

“It’s more important for me that music in Calgary grows,” said Severo, who grew up in Montreal and said the fight for recognition and support as a musician here in Cowtown is a tougher battle.

Justin Parsons, a bassist in two local bands, agreed, saying being a musician in Calgary is tough and finding space to practise is definitely one of the challenges.

“I do feel I work quite hard just to get a few people to my shows,” he said. “The more places we have for musicians to gather will just make the scene stronger.”

Severo, a musician himself for 25 years, said despite feeling the economic pinch right now, he plans to open his studio doors to artists for free on the last Saturday of each month, beginning this weekend.

“I’m happy to do it; it’s my passion for music,” he said.
